Harford County Public Library Foundation Diamond Earring Raffle Winner Announced
Anastacia Colon was announced as the winner of the diamond earring raffle to benefit the Harford County Public Library Foundation. Colon's name was pulled from over 950 entries at the library gala on November 6. Raffle tickets were sold between September 13 through November 5 and raised funds for the library. The 1.5 carat diamond earrings, valued at $5,895, were generously donated by Saxon's Diamond Center.

Harford County Public Library (HCPL) Foundation held its 6th annual gala, the Mad Hatter’s Ball, on November 6, 2010. Guests, many adorned in hats, celebrated another year of success for the Library Foundation by raising $135,000.
"Everyone enjoyed this year’s gala with its whimsical and fun theme," stated Mary Hastler, Associate Director for the Library. "A special thanks to our generous sponsors, hardworking volunteers, and to all who made this an unforgettable event. The Library is truly appreciative of the support that it receives from the Harford County community."
Guests were greeted by "the Queen and her army of cards," thanks to a selection of Harford Community College actors. Décor included large tea cups on towers by Fandango Productions; tea cup centerpieces created by Richardson’s Florist; a wide selection of food prepared by Pairs Bistro; coffee and teas from Coffee Coffee, cheese by Broom’s Bloom Dairy; beverages from Bottleworks; sound provided by Luciano’s Entertainment and music throughout the evening from the Jeff Decker band. Guests could also purchase long stemmed roses from Flowers by Bauer’s.
"We were so pleased to be a part of this year’s gala. The theme was fabulous and night was a huge success," explained Hillary Depman, owner of Coffee Coffee. We have received wonderful feedback from our customers who attended the event. The Depman family and Coffee Coffee are proud to have developed such a great partnership with the Library Foundation and we look forward to many successful galas in the future!"
Guests bid from a selection of live auction packages that included a Raven’s weekend with tickets and hotel accommodations, a three night stay at Williamsburg, and a behind the scenes tour at the Smithsonian. Aimee O’Neill was the event auctioneer.
"Each gala has been a unique event with this one becoming our largest achievement to date, enabling the Foundation to support many Library services and resources," stated Terry Troy, HCPL Foundation President. "It was a night to remember with whimsical hats, amazing décor, fantastic food and great music. Thank you to everyone involved for making this event a resounding success for both the HCPL Foundation and Harford County."

Harford County Public Library Foundation announced the campaign kick-off for the Bel Air Children’s Area Early Literacy Interactive Space. The campaign is a joint effort between the Bel Air Friends of the Library and the Harford County Public Library Foundation. A check was presented to the Library from the Foundation on October 20th in the amount of $10,000, along with a $10,000 donation from the Bel Air Friends and a $5,000 donation from the Morris A. Mechanic Foundation.
"Our committee is thrilled with the response from the community to support this project," stated Mari Kane, President of the Bel Air Friends. "We advertised it at a recent book sale and every remark we received was positive. People always ask what we are going to do with the money we raise, and this time I said ‘I’ll show you what we’re going to do right now.’ "
The Bel Air Children’s Department has served the children and families of the community for 50 years at its current location and this branch has been a destination for generations of young readers. "My son spends time each week at the Bel Air Library. This area has spawned his reading skills," shared Anita Brightman, President of A. Bright Idea Advertising and Public Relations and Harford County Public Library Foundation Board Member. "The resources and staff in this area are a valuable asset to our community and I hope library patrons, families and the local business community support this renovation with enthusiasm."
The Early Literacy Interactive Space will be an interactive area targeted to the youngest library customers and families. Through engaging play, age appropriate materials and access to innovative programs, this dedicated area will encourage the emergent literacy skills essential for school readiness in children. "We are very excited about this project; having an early literacy center in the library will provide a unique opportunity for the children of Harford County," stated Annie Kovach, Asst. Branch Manager, Children’s Services. "We’re thankful for the generosity of the Friends and the Foundation and their continued support of the library’s services and activities for children."
The Morris A. Mechanic Foundation, a contributor towards the campaign stated, "Children are a community’s greatest asset; they are our future. Libraries are an integral part of a child’s developmental process and a storehouse of knowledge."
"This new learning space will continue the strong tradition of Harford County Public Library, providing essential materials, resources and services to its youngest customers in fostering the development of school readiness skills," stated Mary Hastler, Associate Director.
Funds raised from this campaign will be used to purchase furniture, materials and décor necessary to transform the space into an invigorating learning environment. The renovation is planned to begin in late 2012 with a completion date of spring 2013. The goal of the campaign is to raise $50,000.
