$15,000 Donation to Library

The Harford County Public Library Foundation made a donation of $15,000 to Harford County Public Library on December 6, 2010. The funds, which were raised during the Buy-A-Book Campaign, will be used to purchase materials for the library system.

"The HCPL Foundation Board is very excited to be presenting this $15,000 check to the Harford County Library for material purchases," commented Terry Troy, Foundation Board President. "Thank you to the Harford County community members who have been very generous and supportive of the Foundation."

Funds were raised during the 2009 Buy-A-Book Campaign which asked library card holders to support the library by becoming a donor to the HCPL Foundation.

Foundation Director Vanessa Milio indicated that, "most donations came in as gifts of $25 or $50, which may seem small but added up to a generous donation for our library system."

On hand to receive the funds was Library Director, Mary Hastler. "Our customers generously support library resources and services in Harford County and this is evidenced by the giving spirit of our community," stated Ms. Hastler.

Harford County Public Library Foundation Diamond Earring Raffle Winner Announced

November 19, 2010 Harford County Public Library Foundation Diamond Earring Raffle Winner Announced Anastacia Colon was announced as the winner of the diamond earring raffle to benefit the Harford County Public Library Foundation. Colon's name was pulled from over 950 entries at the library gala on November 6. Raffle tickets were sold between September 13 through November 5 and raised funds for the library. The 1.5 carat diamond earrings, valued at $5,895, were generously donated by Saxon's Diamond Center. Mad Hatter’s Ball Raises $135,000

Harford County Public Library (HCPL) Foundation held its 6th annual gala, the Mad Hatter’s Ball, on November 6, 2010. Guests, many adorned in hats, celebrated another year of success for the Library Foundation by raising $135,000.

"Everyone enjoyed this year’s gala with its whimsical and fun theme," stated Mary Hastler, Associate Director for the Library. "A special thanks to our generous sponsors, hardworking volunteers, and to all who made this an unforgettable event. The Library is truly appreciative of the support that it receives from the Harford County community."

Guests were greeted by "the Queen and her army of cards," thanks to a selection of Harford Community College actors. Décor included large tea cups on towers by Fandango Productions; tea cup centerpieces created by Richardson’s Florist; a wide selection of food prepared by Pairs Bistro; coffee and teas from Coffee Coffee, cheese by Broom’s Bloom Dairy; beverages from Bottleworks; sound provided by Luciano’s Entertainment and music throughout the evening from the Jeff Decker band. Guests could also purchase long stemmed roses from Flowers by Bauer’s.

"We were so pleased to be a part of this year’s gala. The theme was fabulous and night was a huge success," explained Hillary Depman, owner of Coffee Coffee. We have received wonderful feedback from our customers who attended the event. The Depman family and Coffee Coffee are proud to have developed such a great partnership with the Library Foundation and we look forward to many successful galas in the future!"

Guests bid from a selection of live auction packages that included a Raven’s weekend with tickets and hotel accommodations, a three night stay at Williamsburg, and a behind the scenes tour at the Smithsonian. Aimee O’Neill was the event auctioneer.

"Each gala has been a unique event with this one becoming our largest achievement to date, enabling the Foundation to support many Library services and resources," stated Terry Troy, HCPL Foundation President. "It was a night to remember with whimsical hats, amazing décor, fantastic food and great music. Thank you to everyone involved for making this event a resounding success for both the HCPL Foundation and Harford County."

Campaign Kick-Off for Early Literacy Interactive Space at Bel Air Library

November 9, 2010 Harford County Public Library Foundation announced the campaign kick-off for the Bel Air Children’s Area Early Literacy Interactive Space. The campaign is a joint effort between the Bel Air Friends of the Library and the Harford County Public Library Foundation. A check was presented to the Library from the Foundation on October 20th in the amount of $10,000, along with a $10,000 donation from the Bel Air Friends and a $5,000 donation from the Morris A. Mechanic Foundation. "Our committee is thrilled with the response from the community to support this project," stated Mari Kane, President of the Bel Air Friends. "We advertised it at a recent book sale and every remark we received was positive. People always ask what we are going to do with the money we raise, and this time I said ‘I’ll show you what we’re going to do right now.’ " The Bel Air Children’s Department has served the children and families of the community for 50 years at its current location and this branch has been a destination for generations of young readers. "My son spends time each week at the Bel Air Library. This area has spawned his reading skills," shared Anita Brightman, President of A. Bright Idea Advertising and Public Relations and Harford County Public Library Foundation Board Member. "The resources and staff in this area are a valuable asset to our community and I hope library patrons, families and the local business community support this renovation with enthusiasm." The Early Literacy Interactive Space will be an interactive area targeted to the youngest library customers and families. Through engaging play, age appropriate materials and access to innovative programs, this dedicated area will encourage the emergent literacy skills essential for school readiness in children. "We are very excited about this project; having an early literacy center in the library will provide a unique opportunity for the children of Harford County," stated Annie Kovach, Asst. Branch Manager, Children’s Services. "We’re thankful for the generosity of the Friends and the Foundation and their continued support of the library’s services and activities for children." The Morris A. Mechanic Foundation, a contributor towards the campaign stated, "Children are a community’s greatest asset; they are our future. Libraries are an integral part of a child’s developmental process and a storehouse of knowledge." "This new learning space will continue the strong tradition of Harford County Public Library, providing essential materials, resources and services to its youngest customers in fostering the development of school readiness skills," stated Mary Hastler, Associate Director. Funds raised from this campaign will be used to purchase furniture, materials and décor necessary to transform the space into an invigorating learning environment. The renovation is planned to begin in late 2012 with a completion date of spring 2013. The goal of the campaign is to raise $50,000. Sneak Peak at Renovated Whiteford Branch



Donors to the Whiteford Branch Campaign attended a special reception on Monday, January 4 at the newly renovated Whiteford Branch giving them an opportunity to celebrate their success with Library staff and members of the Board of Trustees.

"I would have never dreamed we would have something like this in North Harford," exclaimed North Harford Friends President, Sara Robinson. "This library adds to the quality of life for the residents of North Harford, and the Friends group is very proud of its accomplishments in helping to make this expanded branch a reality," further stated Mrs. Robinson. The North Harford Friends donated $25,000 to the Whiteford Branch campaign.

The Whiteford Branch Campaign, a collaboration between the North Harford Friends and the HCPL Foundation, had a goal to raise $50,000. Funds were raised from local businesses, philanthropic leaders and area families. The campaign ran from April 2008 through December 2009 and with the community's support raised $69,000. Major donors of the campaign included the North Harford Friends, Exelon Corporation, Klein's Family Foundation and the HCPL Foundation Board of Directors. The funds were donated to the Library to purchase materials, enhance the teen room and build an interactive play space for children.

Richard Kinard, HCPL Foundation Board and Library Board of Trustees member commented on the success of the campaign. "This is a perfect example of what the community, Library system and government can do working together with a common goal. This is a perfect result."

Sentiments of the success of the Whiteford Branch campaign were equally shared by Audra Caplan, Library Director. "We are so grateful for the many contributors to the Whiteford campaign. This branch is truly a community center for the area and thank you to all that made this possible."

The new building has increased in size to 13,278 sq. ft; a capacity to hold 70,000 items in the collection; 24 public access computers; meeting room with a 120 person capacity; teen room including a flat screen television with gaming system; children's area with an interactive play space; and local history room.

In response to being asked how she felt about the campaign and the support of the many donors throughout the community Terry Troy, Vice President, HCPL Foundation Board stated, "We are all very excited to be here today, to share in the wonderful success of the campaign and expansion of this branch. It is a new decade and a new beginning for North Harford!"
