Fallston Branch

The Fallston Branch of Harford County Public Library held its grand opening celebration in March of 1985. Located on Rt. 152, the 13,500 square foot library is a destination for many in the surrounding region. With a population area of 10,303, Fallston is a very active branch, with over 380,000 items circulating from the 82,000+ item collection in FY11 and over 10,000 people on average walking into the Fallston Branch each month.
The Fallston Branch has an active Friends group, the second oldest in the county. They host highly successful book sales twice a year, in April and mid-November. The Fallston Friends also sponsor the Evening Book Discussion Group on the first Monday evening of each month (September – June). The Fallston Library offers a Daytime Book Discussion Group on the third Wednesday morning of each month (September – June).
In addition to book groups, the Fallston Branch offers a wide variety of programs for the whole family — over 14,000 customers participated in the 248 programs offered in FY11. Some of the most popular programs include Babies Love Books, held every first Monday of the month for ages 6 – 24 months, Toddler Tales held every first Wednesday of the month for ages 18 – 36 months, Drop-in Story Times every Friday morning and evening Sleepy Time Stories for those whose schedules don’t allow for attendance at daytime programs.
The Teen Advisory Group (TAG) meets every first Tuesday and plans both fun and informative activities for area teens. The branch offers great programs for adults such as travelogue programs highlighting exotic locations, gardening and holiday decorating programs, and music trivia contests. The Fallston Library also offers intergenerational programming for all ages, such as the very popular American Girl programs.
The staff at the Fallston Ask-a-Librarian Desk are available to assist with questions, including general inquiries on job hunting, recommendations for good books to read, and demonstrating how to download eBooks or audiobooks with the eBook eXperience station.
The Fallston Branch has recently developed two very successful community partnerships. A partnership with the new Veronica “Roni” Chenowith Activity Center provides book and film discussion groups and gaming activities for the senior population. The Fallston Branch also works with at-risk adolescents participating in the Freestate Challenge Academy cadet program, offering community service projects and job-shadowing opportunities as well as book discussion groups, scavenger hunts, use of library computers and other fun activities for the group.
The Fallston Branch also has an ongoing partnership with various scout troops in the area, who are often called upon to assist with the setup of the Friends book sales. The branch was recently chosen as the recipient of an Eagle Scout Project for Troop 899 with the newly renovated landscaping at the front of the branch the impressive result. The plants used are not only beautiful, but local to the region, sustainable, and slow-growing.
