Did you know…
On February 2, 1925, a heroic dog sled relay was set up in Nome, Alaska when frigid air temperatures made it impossible for medicine to be delivered to people ill with diphtheria. Mushers and dogs, led by Balto and Togo made the 674-mile trek in below-freezing conditions and delivered the medicine preventing more deaths. Balto became a national hero and a statue was erected in his honor in New York City’s Central Park. To find out more information and to see a larger photo of the statue, visit http://www.centralpark.com/pages/attractions/balto.html.
On February 12, 1931, the horror movie classic Dracula starring Bela Lugosi premiered in New York City. Originally slated to be released on Friday, February 13th, director Tod Browning, who was supersititious, asked for the opening to be delayed by one day. Despite its delay, Dracula went on to become one of the most loved movies in the horror genre. If you would like to watch this movie, visit any of the branches of our library to request the DVD.

Great Reads
| The Adoration of Jenna Fox by Mary E. Pearson Imagine waking up in a weirdly empty house, perfectly healthy but not remembering who and where you are. Your mother and grandmother tell you you’ve survived a terrible car crash and have amnesia, but their odd behavior hints at an even stranger tale. The Adoration of Jenna Fox tells the riveting story of Jenna’s search for the truth about who and what she really is. Along the way she learns important lessons about fitting in (or not), learning how to live in the world, discovering the nature of true friendship, and coming to terms with the selfish aspects of all our closest relationships. | |
| Devil’s Kiss by Sarwat Chadda Even though the rumors say that her father murdered her mother, Billi Sangreal knows the truth — her mother was killed by a ghul — a demon. She knows this because her father is a member of the Templars, a secret order of knights that protect the world from supernatural forces. Billi would rather just be a normal high school girl, but when a demon starts stealing the souls of children, Billi must help her father and the other Templars fight against this ancient evil. | |
| Carter Finally Gets It by Brent Crawford Will Carter isn’t sure where he fits in — he’s on the football team but he’s not a jock, he takes drama but he’s not a theater geek, and he hit the trombone player with a field goal kick so no one in the band likes him. Right now he’d just like to go on a date with Abby and avoid getting a goofy nick name from his friends. A hilarious story about one boy trying to survive his first year of high school. |
