Update regarding the OverDrive app for ChromeOS

Google announced that they are sunsetting Chrome apps built with App Runtime for Chrome (ARC) by the end of 2020. As a result, we will discontinue support for the Chrome Web Store version of the OverDrive app, effective November 20, 2020.

Google first launched ARC in 2014 to allow ChromeOS devices (e.g. Chromebooks) to support the ability to install and run Android-based apps. We launched the OverDrive app on the Chrome web store in October 29, 2014. Since then, Google has evolved the ChromeOS platform, and most Chromebook devices now offer support for downloading apps directly from the Google Play Store.

User impact

Beginning November 20, 2020, we will remove the OverDrive app from the Chrome Web Store. This will prevent future downloads of the application. We will also update relevant help materials to direct users on devices running ChromeOS to the Google Play Store. Users who have already downloaded the Chrome Web Store’s version of the OverDrive app can continue to use it, though OverDrive’s ability to troubleshoot and resolve any reported issues will be limited. Going forward, new users on ChromeOS devices can access the Google Play Store directly to download OverDrive apps, including Libby and Sora.
